IberLAND’s PI, Manuel Bastias Saavedra, stayed at the History Department of the Universidad de Chile as visiting researcher in the month of August.

During his stay, he gave the presentation “¿Cómo pensar la tierra y la propiedad más allá de las dicotomías? Palabras, cuerpos y espíritus en el mundo ibérico (1500-1800)” at the Instituto de Historia de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) on August 26, 2025. This talk was organized by IberLAND associate researcher, Tomás Catepillán, as part of his Fondecyt-funded project “Indios e indígenas en el Chile histórico (1750-1850).

Bastias Saavedra also presented the paper “Acuerdos y Promesas. Conocimiento Normativo Indígena y Ius Commune en la Frontera (Valdivia, 1750-1820)” in the workshop “Reclamaciones, Tratados y Peticiones: diplomacia indígena e institucionalidad colonial y republicana” (programme available here), between 28-29 August, organized by José Manuel Zavala within the framework of the EDGES project, funded by Horizon Europe.
