Roger Lee de Jesus and Marlen D. Palma Silva, postdoctoral researchers of the project, participated in the XLIV Conference of the Portuguese Association of Economic and Social History (APHES), held at the University of Évora (Portugal) on November 14 and 15, 2025.
The session explored the link between normative diversity and the resistance of local populations regarding the regulation of access, possession, use, and exploitation of land in the Early Modern period. It aimed to examine how these colonial populations employed the defense of immemorial customs and usages, as well as the diversity of local normativities, to secure their rights over the land.

The papers examined land disputes in Goa and Oaxaca: Roger Lee de Jesus presented “Privilégios imemoriais, uso da terra e resistência colonial: o caso das aldeias de Goa (sécs. XVI-XVII),” while Marlen D. Palma Silva presented “La inmemorialidad en disputa: conflicto por tierras en dos pueblos del valle de Oaxaca, Nueva España (siglos XVII-XVIII).” Full programme available here.
