IberLAND’s PI Manuel Bastias Saavedra gave a Keynote Lecture at the conference Porque todo o lo más es nuevo en las Indias. Change and Variety on Colonial Law during the 18th Century, which took place at the Law Faculty of the Federal University of Ceará on November 11 and 12, 2024 in Fortaleza. The lecture was on his forthcoming monograph, titled Frontier Law, which explores the interaction between indigenous and Spanish normativities in 18th century Valdivia, in southern Chile.

The conference was organized by the “Comparing Early Modern Colonial Laws” (CoCoLaw) project, led by Prof. Heikki Pihlajamäki at the University of Helsinki, and hosted by the  Núcleo de Estudos sobre o Direito na América Portuguesa (NEDAP), headed by Prof. Gustavo Cabral of the Federal University of Ceará.
