On 23 January 2025, our PhD candidate Alina Rodríguez Sánchez participated in the “Normative Knowledge and the Emergence of New Spain” conference, held at the Max Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory in Frankfurt am Main, Germany – full programme here.
She gave a presentation entitled ‘Ruling the Mountains and the Wastelands: Boundary Making and the Normativities of Uncultivated Land in the Mixtec Area, 1530s–1580s”, exploring how the formation of boundaries in early New Spain was deeply connected to struggles over land use, not only regarding highly contested agricultural areas, but also about woods, mountains and pastures.
