Manuel Bastias Saavedra, Principal Investigator of the project, and Marlen D. Palma Silva, postdoctoral researcher, participated in the 3rd International Congress on Pre-Hispanic Law (3er Congreso Internacional sobre el Derecho Prehispánico), held in Mexico City from October 5 to 7, 2026. The Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas (UNAM), the Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia (ENAH) and the Dirección de Etnohistoria of the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) organized the congress, which took place at the Museo Nacional de Antropología, the Coordinación Nacional de Antropología and the Instituto de Investigaciones Jurídicas.
Manuel Bastias Saavedra delivered the opening keynote lecture online, “Repensando el derecho en Hispanoamérica: del derecho indiano al conocimiento normativo indígena,” which opened the sessions at the Museo Nacional de Antropología. Marlen D. Palma Silva presented “‘Señor de su barrio como los demás caciques’. Gobierno colectivo en Cuilapa, siglos XVI y XVII” in the second panel of the congress, held at the Coordinación Nacional de Antropología.
The congress brought together historians, anthropologists, ethnohistorians and legal scholars to discuss indigenous normative orders before and after the Spanish conquest. The papers approached these orders through codices, chronicles, judicial records and ethnographic fieldwork.
