From November 18–19, 2024, the IberLAND project organized the workshop Vinculação e Herança: A Dinâmica dos Morgadios e Capelas em Novos Contextos Geográficos, at Leibnizhaus (Hannover), organized by Edson Edy S.C. de Brito, in colaboration with the ERC project VINCULUM. The event fostered in-depth discussions on the institution of entailment within family patrimony, emphasizing its varied applications across Europe, Latin America, and Atlantic islands. The workshop aimed to demystify key concepts surrounding these historical institutions and provided comparative insights into similar systems, such as the Ottoman waqf.
The dynamic exchanges among ten guest scholars, the IberLAND team, and other participating researchers helped shed light on how these systems impacted land tenure and social hierarchies in early modern societies, opening new avenues for future research.
We look forward to continuing these discussions in future workshops within the IberLAND project.
